Marbella Club and Puente Romano: Marbella鈥檚 Two Most Luxurious Hotels and Lifestyle Destinations

Marbella鈥檚 reputation as a playground for the world鈥檚 elite rests on more than sea, sun, and fun. Two legendary establishments that have shaped the town鈥檚 personality define it: the classy Marbella Club Hotel and the vibrant Puente Romano Marbella. These aren鈥檛 mere places to rest your head; they are full-sensory experiences known for their exclusivity, luxury, and appeal to a high-profile clientele. Marbella Club and Puente Romano have written Marbella鈥檚 glamorous story, attracting royalty, celebrities, jet setters, and discerning travellers for decades.

These luxury hotels are neighbours, both located right by the sea in the heart of the Golden Mile of Marbella, which is known for its beautiful scenery, opulent real estate, designer boutiques, Blue-flagged beaches, and fine dining in Michelin-starred restaurants.

The highly sought-after area boasts spectacular villas, lavish estates, and sophisticated beachfront apartments in the most prestigious residential complexes in Southern Europe. It鈥檚 fair to say that this local market commands some of the highest prices in the Mediterranean region.

Join us for an insider鈥檚 tour of Marbella鈥檚 two iconic luxury hospitality and lifestyle brands. Discover why Marbella Club and Puente Romano continue to set the standard for elevated hospitality and investment value on the Costa del Sol. Get ready to fall in love with the gorgeous corner of the world, as it happened once to Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe-Langenburg.

The Prince fell in love with a beautiful place, and built a home for his family and friends 鈥 the Marbella Club. Inspired by its success, later he created another beachfront property, also with Andalusian village-style architecture and exquisite amenities 鈥 the Puente Romano.

Both resorts remain luxurious getaways on Marbella鈥檚 Golden Mile 鈥 one as a consciously slow oasis of quiet glamour, historic charm, and laid-back elegant luxury; the other as the Mediterranean's most vibrant place to be, with a plethora of fun activities, exciting nightlife, and modern dining options.

Both of these outstanding destinations are members of the 鈥淟eading Hotels of the World鈥. This membership is not an award, but rather a curated collection of magnificent hotels that meet specific criteria (quality of accommodations, service levels, dining experiences, facilities, etc.), and are committed to providing refined hospitality and exceptional guest experiences 鈥 a unique lifestyle.

The Marbella Club: Birth of Jet Set

Hard to believe, but Marbella owes its glamorous reputation to the misfortune of one single man. Prince Alfonso was travelling with his father, Prince Maximilian de Hohenlohe-Langenburg, when his Rolls Royce broke down, forcing them to stay in the area. A feeling of strong emotional connection to the location led to an investment in property, the finca Santa Margarita.

In 1954, Prince Alfonso鈥檚 vision for the Marbella Club transformed his family鈥檚 humble property into the first luxury hotel on the Costa del Sol, and the small fishing village into a global haven and glitzy enclave. He ushered in Marbella鈥檚 jet-set era by opening the 20-bedroom Mediterranean hideaway for his friends, fellow aristocrats, and high-profile jet-setters, who valued discretion as much as glamour and chic.

In 1956, Prince Alfonso invited his cousin, Rudolf Graf von Sch枚nburg, a young graduate of the Swiss Hotel Management University in Lausanne, to work at the newly established hotel. Known for his charisma, Conde Rudi is credited with setting the standard for elevated hospitality at the Marbella Club. Even after his time as General Manager, he remains a key figure associated with the Marbella Club, considered a "guardian of its secrets" by El Confidencial.

A timeless moment capturing the golden age of Marbella 鈥 where European jet-set glamour, art, and aristocracy came together over long dinners and legendary nights

Word spread quickly. An avalanche of European aristocrats, dignitaries, and celebrities descended in Marbella, rivalling Cote d'Azur, St Tropez, and Monaco. The Marbella Club Hotel started to attract cr猫me de la cr猫me from all over the world. Business moguls, politicians, and Hollywood A-celebrities danced beneath its palm trees, enjoyed its secret MC Champagne Room, sipped cocktails in its Beach Club (one of the first in Spain!) created by Arnold (Noldi) Schreck.

This Swiss-Russian-Mexican architect and designer was the creator of 鈥淎capulco style鈥, with its splendid palapas and tasteful details, and participated in the design and construction of Beverly Hills, California. Prince Alfonso met him in Mexico, where two buildings designed by Schreck in Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco impressed the adventurous aristocrat.

Noldi Schreck was instrumental in translating Prince Alfonso's vision for the Marbella Club Hotel into reality. Later the architect met a developer Jose Banus, a close friend of General Franco, and convinced him that Puerto Banus shouldn鈥檛 be developed with towering skyscrapers accommodating thousands of wealthy families. Instead, Schreck, together with another young Mexican architect Marcos Sainz, proposed a design inspired by a traditional Andalusian village with a luxurious marina.

In 2010, Noldi Schreck was awarded a Star (a bronze Starfish) on the Boulevard of Fame in Marbella. Marcos Sainz made Marbella his home, and contributed greatly to its urban landscape creating his masterpieces on the Golden Mile, in Nueva Andaluc铆a, La Zagaleta, and Guadalmina.

鈥淓legant simplicity is the Marbella Club philosophy. It is our way of life,鈥 said Prince Alfonso. Fostering an exclusive atmosphere, the hotel emphasized personal touches 鈥 fresh flowers in every suite, dinner served on the sand at sunset, and a sense of privacy that became its trademark. It was more than accommodation from the very first moment; it was the genesis of Marbella鈥檚 luxury identity. Although many things have changed, and the hotel has grown a lot, the essence remains the same. The flagman in Marbella鈥檚 history still maintains the glamour of its early days, and the same aristocratic 鈥渆legant simplicity鈥.

One of Europe鈥檚 most iconic beach resorts 鈥 Marbella Club combines legacy, leisure, and laid-back elegance.

Puente Romano: Glamorous Contemporary Luxury

Two and a half decades later, a new chapter began with Puente Romano, amid the rise of Marbella as a playground for Europe鈥檚 elite. In 1974, Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe, still a key figure in shaping Marbella鈥檚 jet-set reputation through his Marbella Club Hotel, envisioned a new venture.

Initially launched as an exclusive residential complex in 1974, Puente Romano comprised luxury apartments built around the ancient Roman Bridge that gave the name to the development. Located within its grounds, the first-century bridge was part of the Via Augusta, a historic Roman road stretched from C谩diz to Rome, connecting the Iberian Peninsula to the heart of the empire. Surrounded by lush subtropical gardens, the cobblestone arch serves today as a symbolic link between antiquity and the present, and adds a layer of historical depth to the site.

Prince Alfonso commissioned a talented Bolivian-born architect, Melvin Villarroel, to design a chic apartment complex adjacent to the Marbella Club. Villarroel, a Marbella resident himself, drew inspiration from the region鈥檚 traditional architecture 鈥 whitewashed walls, terracotta tiles, and intimate courtyards. His design won accolades, including a prize for the Best Tourist Complex in the World, reflecting its seamless fusion of local culture and upscale comfort.

Some apartments were sold privately. In 1979, the remaining units were acquired by Syrian businessman Mouffak Al Midani, and transformed into a 5-star hotel, with the addition of the tennis club. Puente Romano Phase II with 78 fabulous apartments were built in the form of a horseshoe around beautiful gardens and pools. The strong points of these apartments are their size, excellent layout, location next to the reception of the hotel, and a few minute-walk to the beach. Today, 27 separate 3-story buildings comprise Hotel Puente Romano, originally conceived to be a private residential community.

The Puente Romano Tennis Club was founded on the initiative of legendary Swedish player Bj枚rn Borg. The former World 鈩1 tennis player was its director until 1983; then until 1998, Wimbledon champion Manolo Santana managed the club. A defining moment came when Bj枚rn Borg chose Puente Romano as the venue for his wedding to Romanian tennis player Mariana Simionescu.

The Puente Romano Tennis Club grew into one of Southern Europe鈥檚 finest, and Marbella gained even more attention. Many prestigious tennis events have been organized there over the years, including the 1988 Davis Cup final. The greatest names of the world鈥檚 courts have participated in them: Boris Becker, Johny McEnroe, Serena Williams, Henri Leconte鈥

The resort鈥檚 allure has extended beyond tennis. From day one, Puente Romano has distinguished itself through a lively social calendar, defining Marbella鈥檚 brand internationally: pioneering nightclubs, beachfront parties stretching into dawn, gastronomic collaborations that have since become the legend. The hotel鈥檚 nightclub, once known as Regine鈥檚, drew Elizabeth Taylor and Barbara Streisand. Its central court has served as a concert stage for Montserrat Caball茅, Jos茅 Carreras, Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Gloria Estefan, etc.

In 1995, the complex was sold to David Shamoon. The London-based businessman added modern facilities 鈥 conference spaces, a beach club, and an array of dining options 鈥 while preserving the timeless Andalusian soul of the hotel. The design, enhanced by Andrew Martin, has blended historical elements with contemporary sophistication. 鈥淭he Times鈥 called this world-renowned British interior designer a 鈥淕od and a guru鈥.

Martin鈥檚 ideology is to surprise, stimulate, and entertain. When he led the full renovation of the Puente Romano Hotel, which involved the refurbishment of some 200 rooms, he combined warm neutrals with Iranian stone, Egyptian marble, and Tunisian mosaics. He also designed Sea Grill, a fine dining restaurant. His design elements have been used in El Lodge Ski Resort, owned and managed by the Marbella Club group in Sierra Nevada. In 2017, interior design brand Andrew Martin opened its first Spanish showroom in the Marbella Club Hotel's Galeria Comerical.

Today the Puente Romano Marbella is run by the children of David Shamoon. The hotel has introduced a different kind of glamour 鈥 one rooted in energy, reinvention, and community. The privileged location, award-winning gardens of 55,000 m虏, world-class tennis, dance & night clubs, gourmet dining, shopping arcade, award-winning spa, and beachfront luxury with direct access to the beach and promenade have made this resort a self-contained paradise. Its journey from a Roman bridge to a premier luxury resort reflects Marbella鈥檚 own evolution 鈥 from a quiet coastal village to a posh global destination.

The Marbella Club has launched a new seahorse conservation project in partnership with Aula del Mar, a local marine biodiversity foundation. They are also focusing on environmental sustainability by implementing a robust Environmental Management System.

In 2025, the Marbella Club is undergoing significant expansions and enhancements, including the introduction of "Wholeness," a new holistic wellbeing program. It features bespoke soundscapes by OPO meditation app, and the further development of Finca Ana Mar铆a. In 2024, when Marbella Club marked its 70th anniversary, it planned a series of events lined up to commemorate its history. The 50,000 m2 Finca Ana Mar铆a, the "garden of sustainability" where wellness meets nature, became Marbella Club鈥檚 latest bet. An orchard with over 100 new plant varieties, a natural acacia maze, an astronomical observatory, a bird-watching centre, glamping facilities, the El Olivar Lab focusing on utilizing the finca's ecosystem for upcycling, pickling, and fermentation, and relocation of El Olivar by Chef Andr茅s 鈥 all these were parts of the project incorporated into the hotel experience.

Besides unveiling of Finca Ana Mar铆a, other events included a San Juan Wellbeing Festival, culinary experiences with Deyrolle, musical concerts, and a Sustainability Summit for industry colleagues.
